Single-Handle Your Way Through Your Day

Multi-tasking may be the most disruptive buzzword of the modern business landscape. The truth of the matter is that the human brain isn’t designed to multi-task in the way we presently ask it to. Our brains thrive on focus.

So if you’re looking to become more effective in your business, you need to leave the multi-tasking thoughts behind. Put down the cell phone, and focus on these tips.

Start with a task list.

Yes, you’ve heard it before, but it needs to be stressed. No productive day ever begins without a plan. List everything that you hope to get done during your day. Not only does this keep you on track, but it also gives you perspective as to how tasks can be organized and grouped for better efficiency.

Prioritize your task list.

What is the #1 thing that must be accomplished today? That is your first priority on your list. What is the next thing that must be accomplished? That is your second priority. Go through your entire list in this way. When you’re deciding whether a task is a top priority or not, it’s important to analyze what the impact would be if it didn’t get done. Your prioritizing should not be about which tasks you would enjoy more.

Start Single-Handling

Start with task #1 and work your way through it. Don’t stop until it is complete. So much of our time is wasted by starting tasks, getting pulled away, getting reacquainted with the task, so on and so forth. By taking each task to completion, you eliminate the continual effort of finding where you left off. Some studies suggest that you can reduce the amount of time it takes to complete a task by up to 80% just by single-handling.

Every business owner, entrepreneur, and executive wishes he or she had more time in the day, but few stop to consider the ways to make more time in their day. By establishing systems and becoming more disciplined, you will find that you are able to get more done in less time. And who wouldn’t love that?
